The Graduate Program in Physics Applied to Medicine and Biology is a unique program in the Brazilian post-graduate scenario due to its full dedication to the use of Physical methods to investigate problems in Medicine and Biology. The origin of that dedication goes back to the genesis of the program in the mid 90’s and it comes mainly from the pioneering features of the Physics Department of the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Ribeirao Preto from the University of Sao Paulo.
These pioneering features are a result of the constant efforts of faculty members and students in the program to bring together expertises that could be, in a first analysis, seen as diverse areas, but that find their intersection when it comes to studies of complex systems such as those found at the interface Physics/Medicine/Biology.
The program congregates researchers working in areas that cover topics from basic research in Biophysics of biological molecules to the development of new biomaterials and of tools for diagnosis and treatment of human diseases, passing through mathematical/computational methods used, for example, in signal processing and in neurobiophysics. A consolidated infrastructure with full-equipped laboratories, exchange programs and outreach activities with the local community and industries are all available to faculty members and to students. The program offers MSc as well as PhD degrees.
