The Graduate Program in Mathematics (PPG-Mat) of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Sciences (ICMC) was established in 1970. In four decades, it has developed a high level of excellence of its activities. It is a program in constant growth and diversification. Currently it has lines of research in Algebra, Analysis and Geometry.

Its faculty consists of highly qualified researchers with training in Brazil and abroad. Its international presence is intense, enabling students to conduct research internship abroad. It also plays an important role in the provision of teachers for various institutions of the State of São Paulo and other states.

The ICMC offers facilities and resources of last generation, providing learning experience and research, with the help of classrooms and auditoriums with audiovisual resources and videoconferencing, laboratories with modern equipment, library and study rooms. The Campus of USP / São Carlos is well located and offers facilities as student housing and university restaurant. USP is a public university and its courses are free. In addition, PPG-Mat has been supported by major funding agencies in Brazil, through the granting of scholarships to students, enabling them to devote themselves to study.
