The graduate program on Internal Medicine, one of the first clinical programs in Brazil, has the general goal to provide thorough scientific training to researchers in order to develop technical, scientific, and ethical skills on research, teaching and service in health.

Considering the comprehensive nature of the knowledge in Internal Medicine, multi and interdisciplinarity are salient features.

The central axes of the curriculum are focused on the mechanisms associated with: i) production of illnesses in adults and in the elderly, ii) diagnostic investigation in diseases, iii) treatment of diseases based on pathogenic mechanisms. Due to the constant concern with the quality of health education as regarding the formative assessment of students, the program has also focused on the axis of health education.

Initially, the program admitted only medical graduate students, focusing on studies regarding health promotion and disease prevention and treatment. Coinciding with the creation of the courses of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Informatics, Nutrition and Metabolism at the FMRP USP, occurred an expansion of the student profile allowing the participation of non-medical students, expanding the inter and multidisciplinarity.

The cutting-edge research profile of the program has attracted students from various parts of the country and abroad. The graduated students of the program have nucleated several research centers and graduate programs in different regions of Brazil. The program has great social impact on technological, economics, educational, cultural and solidarity aspects.
