The main objective of PROFLETRAS is to empower teachers of Portuguese Language to the teaching in the elementary school, in order to contribute to improving the quality of education in our country. Offered through a national network and coordinated by Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), the program includes the participation of public higher education institutions in the context of Universidade Aberta do Brasil (UAB). 

The program aims to promote: the increasing on the level of students’ proficiency in relation to the skills of reading and writing; the multi-literacy required in the globalized world with the presence of the presupposed web; a proactive attitude of teachers towards students with varying degrees of diversity; the developing of pedagogies that enforce proficiency in literacies, compatible to the nine years attended during the elementary school. 

Considering the multiple theoretical and methodological trends and a strong interdisciplinary perspective, PROFLETRAS aims to form teachers of Portuguese Language facing innovation in the classroom, whereas at the same time they can critically and responsibly reflect on relevant issues about different uses of language contemporaneously present in society.
