The graduate Program on Metallurgical and Materials Engineering was ranked as Top Excellence Program by CAPES, the agency that supports and control all Graduate Programs in Brazil.
The Graduate Program started in 1970, becoming in 1972 the first one in Metallurgical Engineering to be accredited by CAPES. In 1990, the scope of the Program was expanded from Metallurgical Engineering to Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The faculty is composed of 19 Advisors, the Program has about 51 Master students and 65 PhD students, most of them receiving scholarships from the Program through CAPES and CNPq supporting agencies. The graduate students develop research projects in the following áreas: Metallic, Polymeric, Ceramic and Composite Materials, Recycling of Materials and Extractive Metallurgy.
The goals of the Graduate Program are: to graduate outstanding scientists and researchers; to keep his world-class academic staff working together with Post-Doctoral, PhD and Master Students; to establish a bridge between science and the Undergraduate Courses; establish cooperative work in research lines in harmony with the local environment and global concerns about the preservation of mineral and fossil fuel resources.
