The Graduate Program is engaged in the development of human resources for basic and applied research and higher education in the area of Biochemistry. From 1971 until 2006 the Graduate Program has issued 211 Master degrees and 175 Doctor degrees. Many of those nowadays stand out in research and/or higher education in Brazilian and foreign Universities and industries. Most of the dissertations and thesis were carried out in the areas of structure and function of macromolecules, enzymatic kinetics, molecular immunology, regulatory mechanisms of gene expression and metabolism. The current structure of the Master degree allows students to familiarize with basic techniques of biochemistry, structures of biomolecules and regulatory mechanisms of the metabolism. During the Doctorate are offered advanced disciplines that allow the students a contact with the frontier of the knowledge in the areas of biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology. Besides that, students are encouraged to attend to seminars and lectures presented by invited Professors from several Brazilian and foreign Universities, allowing a constant exchange of ideas and collaborations. The Master and Doctorate students might also choose among a set of elective disciplines those which are more oriented toward their dissertation/thesis project.
