The Graduate Programs of the School of Dentistry of the University of São Paulo were approved in 1970. In 1987, some amendments to their Regulation allowed the creation of distinct areas. The Dental Materials area was established in 30/12/1988. That date can be considered as the beginning of the program. The first selection test was conducted in 1989. After all these years of work, the Dental Materials Program contributed to the formation of more than 100 faculty members and researchers in the field of Dentistry. Nowadays, these researchers work in Institutions of Higher Education in Brazil and abroad, and also in the dental materials industry. Many of them also have clinical activities. The program has evolved and had its name changed to "Dentistry (Biomaterials and Oral Biology)" adopted in all instances and published in the Official State Book in October 18th, 2013. Currently, the program has twelve permanente professors, two collaborators and around sixty students, being thirty-five of them graduate students (masters and doctoral) and twenty five undergraduate students.
